- Building code
Colorado has no statewide building code; building codes are adopted and enforced at the local level, apart from public schools and health facilities, manufactured and factory-built housing, and site-built hotels, motels and multifamily buildings in jurisdictions with no codes.
- Wildland-urban interface
The 2025 Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code is a state minimum code that applies to new construction and to significant exterior alterations and additions within the wildland-urban interface, and it is not a retrofit code.
- Who issues the permit
The Colorado Division of Housing lists sixteen counties it knows to have no building department: Baca, Cheyenne, Costilla, Crowley, Custer, Delta, Dolores, Kit Carson, Mineral, Montezuma, Phillips, Prowers, Saguache, Sedgwick, Washington and Yuma.

- Building it yourself
A homeowner may personally do the electrical and plumbing work at their own residence and must obtain a permit from the State Electrical Board or the State Plumbing Board, or from the local building department, before starting, provided the property is not for sale, resale or rent.
