- Building code
Washington has adopted the 2021 Washington State Residential Code, the 2021 International Residential Code with state amendments, effective March 15, 2024.
- Wildfire construction standard
A county or city issuing a residential building permit for a parcel mapped as high or very high wildfire hazard must apply Washington's wildland-urban interface code, which the State Building Code Council adopted as the 2021 Washington Wildland-Urban Interface Code effective March 15, 2024.

- Who issues the permit
Counties and cities enforce the state building code under RCW 19.27.050, so a dwelling on unincorporated land is permitted by the county building department, and a county without one must contract with another county, city or approved inspection agency.

- Building it yourself
A person working on property they own, or on their own residence, is exempt from contractor registration under RCW 18.27.090(12), unless the work is done in order to sell, demolish or lease the property.
