Columbia County is Coast Range timber ground. Columbia Soil and Water Conservation District, at St. Helens, covers almost all of it and charges nothing for technical assistance or a site visit. The exception is the Sauvie Island part of the county, which belongs instead to West Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District over in Portland, and that district runs a forest conservation programme of its own. OSU Extension's county office is at St Helens and delivers Tree School, the Basic Forestry Shortcourse and the extension fire programme locally.
