A free home energy assessment that says where a house is losing heat and which incentives apply to fixing it.

Be clear which of the two you are being offered. The free one is an online assessment you fill in yourself, and it comes back with recommendations for efficiency, comfort and health and safety in your house. The thorough one is different: Home Performance with ENERGY STAR is a three to four hour visit by a specially trained contractor with diagnostic equipment, and it ends in a written report on what your house uses, what it would cost you if it ran properly, the improvements that would cut up to 30 percent of your heating, cooling and water heating, and the cash incentives available for those improvements.
