A single Extension office serves two counties here, and the university says so in the name it gives it: University of Idaho Extension in Gem and Boise Counties, on South Johns Avenue at Emmett. It is the only shared county office of its kind in the state. Southwest District Health also runs a location at Emmett, which is where a septic permit begins. That district is one of seven created by state law, each an independent agency rather than part of any state department, governed by a board the county commissioners in its region appoint.
